Apple has reassured Indian government officials that its investment and manufacturing plans in India remain firmly on track, despite recent comments from former U.S. President Donald Trump urging the company to relocate iPhone production to the United States.
According to a report by PTI, Indian officials reached out to Apple following Trump’s remarks at a business forum in Doha. Trump stated he had told Apple CEO Tim Cook to stop building iPhones in India if the company wanted continued support in the U.S. He added that while production for the Indian market could remain in India, iPhones intended for U.S. consumers should be made domestically.
While Apple has not issued a formal public statement, sources confirmed the company privately reiterated to Indian authorities that India remains a vital part of its global supply chain. An official noted, “Apple has said that its investment plans in India are intact and it proposes to continue to have India as a major manufacturing base for its products.”
India currently accounts for about 15% of Apple’s global iPhone production. In FY25 alone, iPhones worth over ₹1.5 lakh crore were exported from India, primarily to the U.S. Apple has also ramped up local manufacturing, assembling 60% more iPhones year-on-year and expanding production of AirPods through Foxconn in Telangana.
Officials emphasized that India’s rising competitiveness in electronics manufacturing and its expanding tech ecosystem are key factors driving Apple’s long-term commitment to the country.
