Apple Unveils Studio Display and Studio Display XDR with 120Hz Refresh Rate and Medical Imaging Support

New Apple displays feature 5K Retina panels, mini-LED technology, and advanced color accuracy for creative professionals.

Apple Inc. has expanded its professional display lineup with the launch of the Studio Display and Studio Display XDR, introducing enhanced visual performance, a 120Hz refresh rate, and new medical imaging capabilities. The new displays were announced alongside the latest MacBook Pro with M5 Pro and M5 Max and MacBook Air with M5 chip, strengthening Apple’s ecosystem for creative professionals and everyday users.

According to Apple, the refreshed display lineup is designed to deliver one of the most advanced visual experiences available, combining high-resolution panels, professional-grade color accuracy, and improved connectivity to support demanding creative workflows.

John Ternus, Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering at Apple, said the new Studio Display XDR represents a significant advancement in the company’s display technology. He noted that the display’s mini-LED backlighting system, enhanced HDR brightness, and higher refresh rate are designed to transform professional workflows such as filmmaking, graphic design, print production, and 3D animation.

Studio Display XDR: Specifications and Features
The Studio Display XDR features a 27-inch 5K Retina XDR display with a resolution of 5120 × 2880 pixels, delivering extremely sharp visuals and detailed color reproduction. The display uses mini-LED backlighting with 2,304 local dimming zones, enabling deeper contrast and more precise brightness control.

The display can reach up to 2000 nits of peak HDR brightness and supports a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio, making it suitable for high-dynamic-range content production. It also includes a 120Hz refresh rate with Adaptive Sync, dynamically adjusting between 47Hz and 120Hz for smoother motion and improved responsiveness.

Apple has also introduced DICOM medical imaging support for the first time in one of its displays. This feature allows healthcare professionals, including radiologists, to view diagnostic images directly on the display with enhanced accuracy.

Additional features include a 12MP Center Stage camera, an immersive six-speaker audio system with Spatial Audio support, and two Thunderbolt 5 ports for high-speed connectivity and peripheral support.

Studio Display: Specifications and Features
The standard Studio Display also includes a 27-inch 5K Retina panel with more than 14 million pixels, delivering high-resolution visuals for creative and professional applications. The display offers up to 600 nits of brightness and supports the P3 wide color gamut, ensuring accurate color reproduction.

The device includes a 12MP Center Stage camera with Desk View support, allowing users to automatically keep themselves centered during video calls while also showing their desk workspace when needed.

Apple has equipped the display with a studio-quality three-microphone array and a six-speaker sound system featuring four force-cancelling woofers, designed to deliver immersive audio for both communication and media playback.

Like the XDR model, the Studio Display supports Thunderbolt 5 connectivity and can deliver up to 96W of charging power, enabling it to power compatible laptops while connected.
