Google has expanded the power of Gemini AI in Google Drive with a new and innovative feature — AI-generated audio summaries for PDFs. This latest addition allows users to convert lengthy PDF documents into concise, podcast-style audio clips, helping them grasp key information without reading through pages of text.
According to the official Google Workspace blog, the Gemini-powered Audio Overviews feature works by transforming text-heavy documents into natural, conversational audio summaries. Built on the same underlying technology as NotebookLM’s Audio Overview, Gemini automatically generates an MP3-like file and saves it directly to Google Drive for easy access and playback.
How the Gemini Audio Overviews Feature Works
Once the rollout is complete, users will notice a new “Audio Overview” button in the PDF viewer on the web version of Google Drive. Clicking this option prompts Gemini to analyze the file and produce an audio summary within minutes. Users can then listen via a built-in audio player in the side panel or wait for an email notification once the summary file is saved.
The AI-generated audio clips typically range between two and ten minutes in duration and are automatically stored in a new “Audio Overviews” folder inside Drive. These summaries are fully accessible on desktops, tablets, and mobile devices, offering flexibility across platforms.
