Google Tests Long-Awaited Feature to Change Gmail Addresses Without Losing Data

YouTube

Google is finally testing one of the most requested Gmail features—the ability to change a Gmail address without creating a new account. Starting in 2026, users will be able to update their Gmail ID while keeping all existing emails, contacts, files, and Google account data intact.

According to reports and information shared on Google’s Hindi-language support pages, this upcoming feature will allow users to replace their current @gmail.com address with a new one linked to the same Google account. This means users can move away from outdated or embarrassing email IDs without losing access to services like Google Drive, YouTube, Google Photos, or other connected data.

Gmail Address Change Feature
Google has recently confirmed, “You can change your Google Account email address that ends in gmail.com to a new email address that ends in gmail.com.”

The feature will roll out gradually in 2026, meaning not all users will get access at the same time. Once available, users will be able to set a new primary Gmail address while continuing to receive emails sent to the old address. The old Gmail ID will remain active for login and email delivery but will no longer be the main address.

Limitations to Prevent Misuse
Google is placing clear limits on how often Gmail addresses can be changed. Users will be allowed to update their Gmail address only once every 12 months, with a maximum of three changes over the lifetime of the account. These restrictions are designed to prevent misuse and reduce confusion across Google services such as Google Payments, Workspace, and account recovery systems.

This long-awaited update is expected to significantly improve user flexibility, account management, and digital identity control, making Gmail more adaptable to changing personal and professional needs.

With over a billion users worldwide, the Gmail address change feature marks a major step forward in how Google handles email identity and account continuity.
