The International Institute of Information Technology Bangalore (IIIT-B), through its flagship MOSIP initiative, has announced a strategic collaboration with WSO2, a global leader in enterprise digital infrastructure and identity and access management (IAM) solutions.
The partnership aims to advance the development of eSignet, an open source single sign-on (SSO) platform, by aligning it with a common, modern technology stack. The collaboration will strengthen digital identity infrastructure, enhance cybersecurity standards, and enable scalable deployment across governments and enterprises worldwide.
Advancing Secure Digital Identity and Open Standards
eSignet is designed to facilitate secure, seamless digital authentication and identity verification across digital public infrastructure (DPI) ecosystems. By combining WSO2’s deep expertise in IAM platforms, authentication frameworks, and enterprise-grade security with IIIT-B’s research leadership in open standards and digital public goods, the collaboration will focus on:
- Enhancing platform scalability for national and cross-border deployments
- Strengthening cybersecurity and data protection capabilities
- Supporting global digital identity standards and interoperability frameworks
- Improving developer tools and API integrations
The initiative positions eSignet as a robust, standards-compliant SSO solution for secure digital services, citizen identity systems, and enterprise access management.
Key Focus Areas of the Collaboration
1. Research & Development (R&D)
Joint R&D efforts will modernize the code base powering MOSIP’s eSignet and the WSO2 Identity Platform. The collaboration will introduce advanced authentication features, enhanced identity federation, and compliance with emerging global digital identity standards.
2. Community Building & Open Source Adoption
The partners will foster a vibrant global developer community around eSignet, encouraging open source contributions, innovation, and adoption by public sector agencies, enterprises, fintech platforms, and GovTech ecosystems.
3. Ecosystem Enablement & Implementation Support
IIIT-B and WSO2 will provide technical guidance, best practices, and implementation frameworks to organizations deploying eSignet for:
- Single sign-on (SSO) integration
- Identity verification and authentication systems
- Digital public infrastructure (DPI) programs
- Secure access management for citizen and enterprise platforms
“We are delighted to join forces with WSO2, a company with a proven track record in open source identity solutions. This collaboration strengthens eSignet’s technological foundation and reinforces its role as a cornerstone for secure, open, and inclusive digital identity systems globally,” said Prof. S. Rajagopalan, President of the MOSIP program.
Dr. Sanjiva Weerawarana, Founder and CEO of WSO2, added, “WSO2 remains committed to advancing open source digital public goods. Our partnership with IIIT-B and MOSIP will ensure sustainable development of secure, standards-compliant single sign-on solutions that empower governments and enterprises worldwide.”
With governments and enterprises accelerating digital transformation initiatives, the demand for secure identity management, zero-trust authentication, and interoperable digital identity platforms continues to grow.
Through this collaboration, IIIT-B, MOSIP, and WSO2 aim to position eSignet as a globally deployable, open source SSO and IAM solution supporting inclusive digital services, data privacy, and secure online transactions across emerging and developed markets.
