Instagram to Introduce Algorithm Tuning Feature for Personalized Feed Control on Reels and Explore

New Instagram feature will let users customize Reels and Explore feeds by adding or removing topics based on their interests.

Instagram is testing a new algorithm customization feature that will allow users to fine-tune their Reels and Explore feeds. The feature aims to give people more control over what content appears on their screens by letting them add or remove specific topics according to their personal preferences.

The update, announced by Instagram Head Adam Mosseri via Threads, is currently in the testing phase and available only to a small group of users. This move marks Instagram’s latest effort to improve user experience and increase transparency in how its AI-driven content recommendations work.

Fine-Tuning Your Instagram Algorithm
According to Mosseri’s post, the new Instagram algorithm control tool will let users manually select topics they want to see more or less of in their feeds.

“We’re starting to test a way for you to tune your algorithm on Instagram by adding and removing topics based on your interests. We’re launching this feature on Reels first, with plans to expand to Explore soon,” Mosseri said.

This means users will be able to shape their content feed more intentionally — for example, prioritizing travel videos, tech reels, or fashion content, while reducing posts about topics they find irrelevant.

Empowering Users Through Personalized Content
The upcoming algorithm customization feature is part of Instagram’s broader strategy to give users more control and transparency over their digital experience. Over the past year, Instagram has rolled out tools that allow people to:

  • Limit sensitive content and unwanted recommendations.
  • Manage parental controls for teen accounts.
  • Hide irrelevant or repetitive suggested posts.

This latest update goes a step further by enabling direct algorithm tuning, helping users create a personalized and meaningful social media experience. The feature could also enhance engagement rates by ensuring users spend more time on content they genuinely enjoy — a trend that’s reshaping how social media platforms balance AI automation with user autonomy.

The test reflects Instagram’s commitment to improving user satisfaction and offering greater transparency about how its algorithm prioritizes content.
