Jagmeet Singh lost the Burnaby Central seat in British Columbia

Eyeing his third win, Jagmeet Singh has lost the election at the hands of a Liberal candidate, Wade Chang.

Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberal Party has made a surprising comeback in the recent Canadian elections, securing a clear victory. However, the election was a major setback for the New Democratic Party (NDP), led by Jagmeet Singh, who is known for his pro-Khalistan views. The NDP, which once played a key role in supporting the Liberal government under former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, managed to win only 12 seats — the minimum required to retain national party status.

Jagmeet Singh, who had hoped to win for the third time, failed to keep his own seat in Burnaby Central, British Columbia. He was defeated by Wade Chang, a candidate from the Liberal Party. Following this loss, Singh announced that he would step down as the leader of the NDP, ending his eight-year leadership.

The NDP had previously been a coalition partner with the Liberals, helping them pass important legislation. However, in 2024, Singh chose to withdraw support from Trudeau’s party in an effort to position the NDP as an independent force ahead of the 2025 elections. Despite this move, the party supported the government in its diplomatic tensions with India. This election result now leaves the NDP in a weakened position nationally.
