The Government e-Marketplace (GeM) has announced the appointment of Mihir Kumar as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Mihir Kumar, a distinguished officer from the 1996 batch of the Indian Defence Accounts Service (IDAS), has been selected by the Government of India to lead the platform at a crucial juncture in its growth journey.

His appointment comes at a pivotal phase for GeM, which is undergoing a major technological transformation. Built on a robust, technology-agnostic, microservice-based architecture that supports multi-tenancy, multi-rule, and multilingual capabilities, GeM is rapidly evolving into a world-class digital public procurement platform. In a significant milestone, GeM recently surpassed ₹5.4 lakh crore in Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) during FY 2024–25, reinforcing its role as a cornerstone of transparency, efficiency, and inclusivity within India’s digital governance ecosystem.

Prior to joining GeM, Kumar served as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs. With over 28 years of comprehensive experience spanning finance, public administration, and policy implementation, he has held several key leadership positions, including Controller of Defence Accounts under the Ministry of Defence, Director in the Department of Financial Services in the Ministry of Finance, and Deputy Controller of Defence Accounts (DCDA) in the United Nations Mission in Congo.

An alumnus of the Delhi University, Kumar holds a Bachelor’s degree in Economics (Hons) from Kirori Mal College, an LLB from Campus Law Centre, and has completed an MBA (Executive) from the Faculty of Management Studies (FMS), Delhi. He has also undergone executive training at RIPA International, London; MDI Gurgaon; RMIT University, Melbourne; and IIM Bangalore.
