Nvidia has announced the acquisition of SchedMD, an AI and high-performance computing (HPC) software provider best known as the primary developer of Slurm, a widely used open-source workload management system. The move reinforces Nvidia’s commitment to open-source AI infrastructure and expands its growing AI software portfolio.

SchedMD’s Slurm platform plays a critical role in managing large-scale computing workloads across data centers, enabling efficient scheduling of AI model training, inference, and supercomputing jobs. Slurm is a core component of global HPC clusters, cloud environments, and research institutions, helping organizations maximize GPU and server utilization. While Slurm is freely available, SchedMD has historically provided enterprise-grade engineering, optimization, and maintenance support.

Nvidia said the acquisition strengthens the software layer supporting its proprietary CUDA platform, a cornerstone of modern AI development. Financial terms were not disclosed, but Nvidia confirmed Slurm will remain open source, ensuring continued community access and innovation.

“Slurm is part of the critical infrastructure for generative AI and foundation model development, supported on the latest Nvidia hardware,” the company said, highlighting its importance for AI builders and hyperscale data centers.

SchedMD CEO Danny Auble welcomed the acquisition, stating that Nvidia’s expertise in accelerated computing and AI hardware will accelerate Slurm’s development to meet the demands of next-generation AI and supercomputing workloads.

The announcement coincided with Nvidia’s launch of its Nemotron 3 open-source AI models, signaling a broader strategy to strengthen its AI ecosystem and compete with emerging global and open-source AI rivals. Founded in 2010, SchedMD is headquartered in California and employs approximately 40 people.
