PM Modi Met South African President Cyril Ramaphosa at G20 Summit in Johannesburg

Strengthens India–South Africa Strategic Partnership.

Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi met H.E. Mr. Cyril Ramaphosa, President of the Republic of South Africa, on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Johannesburg, marking an important moment in strengthening India–South Africa bilateral relations. Prime Minister Modi thanked President Ramaphosa for the warm hospitality and the successful conduct of the Summit. He also praised South Africa’s efforts in advancing the outcomes and commitments made during the New Delhi G20 Summit, reinforcing continuity within the G20 framework.

Both leaders recalled the deep historical ties that have shaped India–South Africa relations since the independence movements. They reviewed bilateral cooperation across several key sectors, expressing satisfaction with the progress achieved in trade and investment, food security, mining, skill development, youth exchange, and people-to-people connections. Discussions also focused on expanding collaboration in Artificial Intelligence (AI), Digital Public Infrastructure, and critical minerals, highlighting shared priorities in emerging technologies and global supply chain resilience.

Prime Minister Modi welcomed the growing participation of Indian companies in South Africa and both leaders agreed to facilitate two-way investments in sectors such as infrastructure, technology, innovation, mining, and startups. PM Modi also thanked President Ramaphosa for South Africa’s support in the cheetah relocation initiative, an important component of India’s wildlife conservation efforts, and invited him to join the International Big Cat Alliance led by India.

The two leaders reiterated their commitment to working together to amplify the voice of the Global South, especially in multilateral forums. PM Modi appreciated South Africa’s initiative in hosting the IBSA leaders’ meeting, reflecting shared leadership among India, Brazil and South Africa. President Ramaphosa assured full South African support for India’s upcoming BRICS Chairship in 2026, emphasizing continued cooperation on global governance reforms and South-South partnerships.
