Announces ₹85 Crore investment in Wadhwani AI.
Google has announced a ₹85 crore investment in Wadhwani AI to accelerate the adoption of artificial intelligence across India’s public education and skilling ecosystem. The grant, provided through Google’s philanthropic arm Google.org, aims to integrate “India-first” AI solutions into government-owned education and social platforms, helping modernise learning outcomes at scale.
The initiative is part of Google’s broader commitment to democratise responsible AI in India and is expected to benefit nearly 75 million students and 1.8 million educators by December 2027. The move comes at a time when AI adoption in education is gaining momentum, with research indicating that 74% of Indians believe AI can significantly improve student outcomes.
Strengthening Existing Government Platforms with AI
Rather than building parallel systems, Google and Wadhwani AI will focus on enhancing platforms already widely used by citizens. These include the SWAYAM online learning portal and the POSHAN Tracker, which supports health and nutrition monitoring. By embedding AI directly into these platforms, the collaboration aims to deliver personalised, data-driven support to learners across different life stages—from early childhood education to vocational and workforce training.
AI-Powered Learning in Indian Languages
The funding will support the development and deployment of several AI-driven education tools tailored to India’s linguistic and cultural diversity. Planned features include voice-based AI systems to help young learners improve oral reading fluency in 10 Indian languages, as well as AI-powered English language coaches designed to strengthen communication skills for students and early-career professionals.
In addition, Google will expand access to its core education products, including Gemini and Google Classroom, by making them available in multiple Indian languages. This multilingual approach is expected to improve accessibility and inclusion, particularly for learners in tier 2 and tier 3 cities.
Part of a Larger AI Education Strategy in India
The grant to Wadhwani AI complements Google’s wider AI initiatives in the country. These include a partnership with the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship to launch India’s first AI-enabled university at Chaudhary Charan Singh University. Insights from both the Wadhwani AI collaboration and the university pilot will contribute to the creation of a national framework for modernising higher education, serving as a blueprint for institutions across India.
“We are energised by the opportunity to scale this impact. By combining the human connection of teaching with research-backed AI principles in learning, we are helping build a future where every learner in India—regardless of language or location—has the opportunity to reach their full potential,” said Preeti Lobana, Vice President and Country Manager, Google India.
With this ₹85 crore investment, Google and Wadhwani AI aim to bridge India’s digital education divide, strengthen public platforms with responsible AI, and shape the future of learning and skilling across the country.
