ChatGPT Launches Global Group Chats Feature, Bringing AI-Powered Collaboration to Users Worldwide

OpenAI has officially rolled out the new ChatGPT Group Chats feature globally, making the AI platform more social, interactive, and collaborative than ever. The update is now available to users across Free, Go, Plus and Pro plans, expanding ChatGPT beyond a one-to-one assistant into a powerful multi-user AI collaboration tool. After early testing in Japan and New Zealand, the feature is now accessible to users around the world.

ChatGPT With the new Group Chats feature, people can collaborate with each other and with ChatGPT inside one shared conversation. OpenAI says the feature enables teams, friends, classmates, and communities to plan trips, brainstorm ideas, co-write documents, compare information, debate topics, and work more efficiently — while ChatGPT can step in to summarize, search, analyse, or suggest ideas when needed.

Each group chat can include up to 20 participants, allowing for collaborative discussions without compromising privacy. All members keep their personal settings and ChatGPT memory private. Users can create a group chat by tapping the People icon, adding contacts, or sharing an invite link. Every participant sets up a basic profile with their name, username, and photo. To maintain clarity, adding new people to an existing chat automatically creates a new conversation, keeping earlier discussions intact.

OpenAI notes that ChatGPT can detect when to contribute and when to stay silent during discussions. Users can tag “ChatGPT” to request a direct answer, and the model can react with emojis or reference user profile photos, making conversations feel more natural and social.

The company says this global release marks a major evolution toward making ChatGPT a collaborative, real-time AI communication platform. “Over time, we see ChatGPT playing a more active role in real group conversations, helping people plan, create, and take action together,” OpenAI shared in a statement to TechCrunch.

The update follows the introduction of GPT-5.1, which includes new Instant and Thinking modes for smarter and faster AI responses, as well as the launch of Sora, OpenAI’s TikTok-style social platform for AI-generated short videos. With Group Chats, OpenAI continues expanding ChatGPT into a multi-purpose environment that blends AI assistance, teamwork, creativity, and social interaction.
