OpenAI has confirmed that the Voice feature on the ChatGPT Mac app will stop working from January 15, 2026. The change means Mac users who rely on voice-based conversations with ChatGPT will need to switch to other platforms to continue using the feature.
According to OpenAI’s support page, the decision is part of a broader plan to streamline and improve voice experiences across ChatGPT platforms. While the move may disappoint users who prefer speaking instead of typing, OpenAI said the change is aimed at creating a more consistent and improved voice experience overall.
Currently, the Voice feature on the ChatGPT macOS app allows users to have hands-free, real-time conversations with the AI, making it useful for multitasking and accessibility. After January 15, however, voice interactions will no longer be supported within the Mac app itself.
OpenAI clarified that Voice will still be available on chatgpt.com, as well as on iOS, Android, and the Windows app. Importantly, no other features of the ChatGPT Mac app will be affected, and users can continue using text-based interactions as usual.
For Mac users who frequently use Voice mode, this means switching to the web version of ChatGPT or using the mobile apps to continue voice conversations. Users still have several months to use the feature on macOS before it is officially disabled.
Media reports suggest that this may be a temporary change, as OpenAI appears to be working on a redesigned or more unified voice system. The current Voice feature on the Mac app may not support the company’s upcoming voice architecture, prompting its removal.
Until OpenAI shares further updates, Mac users who value voice interaction are advised to explore ChatGPT’s web and mobile platforms, where voice capabilities will continue beyond January 2026.
