Foxconn Builds Mini-Township in India as iPhone Manufacturing Expands

For the same, the company is hiring 30,000 Workers With 80% Women Workforce.

Foxconn, the primary contract manufacturer for Apple, has completed a massive recruitment drive for its new iPhone assembly plant in Devanahalli near Bengaluru, hiring nearly 30,000 employees in just nine months. The rapid scale-up marks one of the fastest manufacturing workforce expansions ever recorded in India and underscores the country’s growing role in global electronics manufacturing.

The sprawling 300-acre Foxconn campus has emerged as a critical part of Apple’s strategy to diversify its supply chain beyond China, aligning with India’s broader Make in India and electronics manufacturing push. A defining feature of the facility is its workforce composition, with women accounting for nearly 80% of total employees. Most workers are between 19 and 24 years old, many of whom are entering the formal labour market for the first time, making the project a significant boost for women’s employment in India’s manufacturing sector.

Since beginning trial production earlier this year, the Devanahalli plant has rapidly progressed from assembling the iPhone 16 to producing the latest iPhone 17 Pro Max, reflecting Foxconn’s ability to quickly ramp up high-end smartphone manufacturing. The facility is already operating at a global scale, with more than 80% of its output being exported to international markets, further strengthening India’s position as a key export hub for Apple devices.

To accommodate and retain such a large workforce, Foxconn is developing the site into a self-sustained mini-township. The campus currently includes six large dormitories for employees, with plans underway to add medical centres, educational facilities, and recreational infrastructure. This integrated township model is designed to support long-term operations while improving employee welfare and productivity.

Workers at the Devanahalli facility receive free accommodation and subsidised meals, along with an average monthly salary of around ₹18,000, making these roles among the highest-paying blue-collar manufacturing jobs for women in the region. The initiative is being widely viewed as a benchmark for inclusive industrial growth and workforce development in India.

The project is still in an expansion phase. Foxconn, formally known as Hon Hai Precision Industry, is investing approximately ₹20,000 crore into the facility. Industry experts expect the workforce to grow to 50,000 employees by next year as additional iPhone assembly lines and manufacturing operations come online, further cementing India’s role in Apple’s global production ecosystem.
