Starbucks ropes in Amazon Veteran Anand Varadarajan as CTO

Starbucks has appointed Anand Varadarajan as its new Chief Technology Officer, further strengthening the company’s leadership team as it accelerates efforts to modernise store operations and improve labour efficiency. Varadarajan’s appointment will take effect on January 19, according to the company.

The leadership move comes as Starbucks Chief Executive Officer Brian Niccol continues to push a wide-ranging technology and operational overhaul aimed at enhancing productivity, streamlining workflows, and improving the overall in-store experience for both employees and customers. Technology has become a central pillar of Starbucks’ turnaround strategy as the company looks to stabilise growth and optimise its retail footprint.

Varadarajan takes over the role following the departure of former CTO Deb Hall Lefevre, who stepped down in September. In the interim, Starbucks had appointed Ningyu Chen as acting Chief Technology Officer while it conducted a search for a permanent successor. With Varadarajan’s appointment, the company signals a renewed focus on long-term technology leadership and execution.

Prior to joining Starbucks, Varadarajan spent nearly 19 years at Amazon, where he played a key role in leading technology and supply chain systems for the company’s global grocery business. His experience spans large-scale retail technology, logistics platforms, and enterprise-grade digital infrastructure. Earlier in his career, he also worked at Oracle, giving him deep expertise in enterprise software, backend systems, and complex operational environments.

The appointment aligns with Starbucks’ broader operational reset, which has begun to show early signs of progress. In late October, the company reported its first quarter of comparable sales growth in nearly 18 months, indicating momentum in Niccol’s turnaround efforts, particularly in the US market.

With Varadarajan now leading technology initiatives, Starbucks is expected to increase investment in digital tools, data platforms, and backend systems designed to support store employees, reduce operational friction, and improve speed and consistency across locations. The company is also likely to focus on scalable technology solutions that enhance labour planning, supply chain visibility, and customer engagement, reinforcing Starbucks’ position as a digitally driven retail brand.
