Instagram Launches ‘Instants’ Feature for Sharing Raw and Disappearing Photos With Close Friends

Instagram

Instagram has introduced a new photo-sharing feature called Instants, designed to let users share candid and authentic moments with close friends. The feature focuses on “raw” and “unfiltered” interactions, offering a more casual alternative to highly edited posts and Stories on the platform.

Owned by Meta, Instagram says Instants are built to encourage spontaneous sharing. Photos shared through the feature disappear after they are viewed, although users can save them privately in their archive for up to a year. Archived Instants can also be reshared later as Story recaps.

Unlike traditional Instagram posts and Stories, Instants does not support edits or filters. Each photo appears in its original form inside a smaller square frame, setting it apart from Instagram’s full-screen media formats. Users can react to or reply to an Instant, making the experience more interactive and personal.

The Instants feature is accessible directly from the Instagram inbox, where it appears as a mini stack of photos in the bottom-right corner of the DM section. Users can choose whether to share Instants with their Close Friends list or with followers they follow back.

Instagram has also launched a dedicated Instants app in select regions, including India, allowing users to quickly access the camera and instantly share photos. The separate app is aimed at making real-time sharing faster and more convenient.

All shared Instants are automatically saved to a private archive after the 24-hour viewing period. Archived content remains visible only to the account owner and cannot be accessed by followers or friends. Instagram also allows users to temporarily hide the Instants photo stack from the DM section using a long-press and swipe gesture.

To ensure user safety, Instants includes the same privacy and security controls available on Instagram, including block, mute, and restrict options. The feature also supports parental supervision tools for teen accounts.

With the launch of Instants, Instagram joins the growing trend of platforms focusing on more private, authentic, and short-lived social interactions as users increasingly shift toward casual sharing experiences.
