Google Launches Emergency Live Video for Android to Help First Responders Assess Crises Faster

Google Play

Google has introduced a powerful new safety feature for Android users called Emergency Live Video, enabling emergency responders to request a secure, real-time video stream during calls or texts for help. The feature is designed to give dispatchers clearer situational awareness during critical incidents such as car accidents, medical emergencies, fires, and other high-stress situations where callers may struggle to describe what’s happening.

How Google’s Emergency Live Video Works
During an emergency call or text, a dispatcher can send a request to an Android phone. The user receives an on-screen prompt and can choose whether to share their live camera feed. If accepted, the video begins streaming instantly via end-to-end encryption, ensuring privacy and security. Users retain full control and can stop streaming at any time with a single tap.

The feature requires no installation or setup and works through Google Play services on Android 8 and above.

Google explains that real-time visuals significantly improve response efficiency by helping dispatchers:
• Evaluate crash severity
• Identify environmental hazards
• Verify medical symptoms
• Provide guided instructions for CPR or first aid with better accuracy

Emergency Live Video expands Android’s growing portfolio of safety features, including Emergency Location Service, Car Crash Detection, Fall Detection, and Satellite SOS for off-grid emergencies. Together, these tools aim to reduce the critical time gap between an incident occurring and responders receiving actionable information.

The feature is initially launching in the United States, alongside select regions in Germany and Mexico, in partnership with local public safety agencies. Google says it is actively collaborating with additional global agencies to bring the feature to more countries in the near future.
