In a landmark step toward digital independence and AI advancement, a dozen Latin American countries are joining forces to launch their very own large language model called Latam-GPT in September 2025. This will be the region’s first AI model tailored specifically to understand Latin America’s rich linguistic and cultural diversity.
This open-source initiative is being spearheaded by Chile’s state-run National Center for Artificial Intelligence (CENIA) and involves over 30 institutions from across the region. The project aims to democratize access to artificial intelligence tools in Latin America, bridging the digital divide and reducing reliance on foreign tech giants for AI infrastructure and solutions.
Latam-GPT is being developed with a strong focus on inclusivity, cultural representation, and regional languages—something global models often lack.
