OpenAI has announced a groundbreaking multi-billion-dollar partnership with AMD to massively expand its AI compute capacity and tackle the growing global shortage of artificial intelligence infrastructure. The collaboration will see OpenAI deploy an impressive 6 gigawatts of GPUs, powered by AMD’s next-generation Instinct MI450 chips, with the rollout expected to begin in the second half of 2026.
According to OpenAI President Greg Brockman, this partnership is driven by skyrocketing global demand for AI computing power, as more industries adopt generative AI, machine learning, and large language models.
Brockman further noted that OpenAI’s long-term vision is to give every user access to their own dedicated GPU, a mission that requires a vast expansion of data center infrastructure and AI processing resources. “We’re heading toward a compute scarcity era. That’s why partnerships like this with AMD are crucial—to build capacity ahead of demand,” he added further.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman highlighted that AMD’s leadership in high-performance computing (HPC) and AI chips will play a vital role in accelerating innovation. “This partnership marks a major step toward realizing AI’s full potential. AMD’s technology will help us deliver advanced AI capabilities to people faster than ever before,” Altman said.
While OpenAI continues its strong alliance with Nvidia, the AMD deal adds a strategic layer to its compute ecosystem. Nvidia, which recently announced plans to invest up to $100 billion in OpenAI, remains central to AI model training and inference, while AMD’s chips will strengthen future scalability and performance. With this collaboration, OpenAI aims to expand AI accessibility, reduce compute bottlenecks, and accelerate global digital transformation—ushering in a new era of high-performance, scalable artificial intelligence powered by industry giants AMD and OpenAI.
