Russia Plans to Replace WhatsApp and Telegram with ‘Vlad’s App’: A Step Toward Total Digital Control?

Russia is preparing to launch a new government-controlled messaging app, unofficially called “Vlad’s App”, as it moves to reduce reliance on foreign communication platforms like WhatsApp, Telegram, and X-Chat (owned by Elon Musk). This decision is part of a broader effort by the Russian government to tighten control over the country’s digital space.

A new law that allows the creation of Vlad’s App has already been approved by the Russian parliament’s lower house, the State Duma. It is now awaiting final approval from the upper house and President Vladimir Putin.

Vlad’s App won’t just be for chatting. It’s designed to connect deeply with Russia’s digital government systems. Through the app, users could verify their identity, sign documents, register transactions, make payments, and access public services like the Gosuslugi portal. Officials say these features will be based on user consent, but privacy advocates are concerned.

There are reports that the government might block WhatsApp and Telegram completely, making it almost necessary for Russians to switch to Vlad’s App. This move is similar to what China has done, where only local apps are widely used, and global services are limited or banned.

Digital rights groups are worried that this app could allow the government to track conversations, limit freedom of expression, and monitor citizens more closely. While officials claim the app will be secure and user-friendly, critics fear it could lead to more censorship and state surveillance, leaving people with fewer ways to communicate privately or access independent news and opinions.

If passed, the new law could change how millions of Russians connect online, raising major concerns for freedom and privacy in the country.
