WhatsApp has begun rolling out a redesigned About section that lets users post temporary, timed status updates with custom messages, emojis and adjustable visibility controls. The feature, available to select users on the latest App Store build, brings a more dynamic and real-time way to share activity or availability — similar to short-term status updates on other platforms.
According to reports, the updated WhatsApp About works like a temporary mini-status feature. Users can post quick updates such as “In a meeting,” “On vacation,” “Busy,” or “Out for lunch” and assign a timer that controls how long the About message stays active. Timer options reportedly range from a few hours to an entire month. Once the timer expires, the About automatically resets, keeping profiles current without manual updates.
WhatsApp is also integrating the new About bubble directly inside chat windows, allowing people to view someone’s current activity without opening their full profile. Users can also see how much time is left before a status expires, making it easier to extend, shorten or replace it as needed.
The redesigned About section also includes improved privacy settings, quick-edit options and a more modern UI. The feature is limited to a small number of users at present but is expected to roll out more widely across iOS and Android in the coming weeks.
