Prime Minister Mark Carney will hold his first cabinet meeting today at 10 a.m. on Parliament Hill, following a major shakeup in Canada’s federal leadership. On Tuesday, Carney announced a new cabinet lineup, bringing in 24 new people and reassigning others to different roles. He said this move shows his commitment to change and progress.
Some well-known names from former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government—like Chrystia Freeland, Mélanie Joly, François-Philippe Champagne, and Dominic LeBlanc—will remain in the cabinet. However, other senior members, such as former natural resources minister Jonathan Wilkinson and former defence minister Bill Blair, were left out.
In total, Carney appointed 28 full ministers and added 10 secretaries of state, creating a two-tier team. He said the goal was to mix fresh ideas with experience. About half of the new cabinet members have never served in top government roles before.
Carney told media that when Parliament resumes on May 26, his team will act quickly and with determination. He promised that the government will fulfill its commitments and focus on major goals like building a stronger economy, improving Canada’s relationship with the U.S., and investing in national development projects.
He also talked about uniting different sectors of society—like workers, businesses, and communities—to create a more connected and successful Canada. Carney wants to make Canada’s economy the best in the G7 and emphasized working together to achieve that vision.
