Amazon’s Zoox Launches Robotaxi Service in Las Vegas, Taking on Tesla and Waymo in the Autonomous Vehicle Race

A new chapter in the autonomous vehicle revolution has arrived on the Las Vegas Strip as Amazon-owned Zoox officially launched its driverless robotaxi service. The futuristic, box-shaped Zoox robotaxi began offering free public rides on Wednesday, marking a major milestone in the global race for self-driving cars.

Unlike rivals Tesla and Waymo, Zoox has designed a purpose-built autonomous vehicle with no steering wheel, pedals, or manual controls. Instead, passengers sit facing each other in a spacious cabin, emphasizing comfort and convenience. Using the Zoox smartphone app, riders can request trips to destinations across the Las Vegas Strip, with staff on-site to assist with pickups and drop-offs.

Zoox co-founder and CTO Jesse Levinson explained the company’s vision: “The idea for Zoox was never to make a car drive itself; it was about creating an entirely new mode of transportation.”

The Las Vegas launch is just the beginning. San Francisco is next, with a waitlist already open, while Austin and Miami are also on the roadmap. Zoox’s expansion puts it head-to-head with Waymo, which already operates driverless rides in Phoenix, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Austin, and Atlanta, and Tesla, which rolled out robotaxi rides in Austin earlier this year.

For now, Zoox rides in Las Vegas remain free of charge as the company awaits regulatory approval to begin commercial operations. Once approved, Zoox plans to price its rides competitively with traditional taxis and ride-hailing platforms like Uber and Lyft.

Amazon acquired Zoox in 2020 for $1.3 billion, signaling its serious entry into the autonomous ride-hailing market. After more than a decade of development, Zoox is now positioning itself as a bold competitor in the robotaxi wars, with its distinctive design and true driverless technology setting it apart from the pack.
