Apple Plans OLED Display Upgrade for iPad Air, MacBook Air and iMac in Major 2026–2028 Shift

Apple Plans

Apple is reportedly preparing a wide transition to OLED displays across its iPad and Mac lineup, bringing improved visuals to more devices beyond the iPhone and iPad Pro.

Apple is planning a significant transition to OLED display technology across much of its iPad and Mac lineup over the next few years, according to supply chain reports and prominent Apple analysts. The move is expected to roll out gradually between 2026 and 2028, starting with select devices such as the iPad mini and MacBook Pro, before expanding to the iPad Air, MacBook Air, and iMac.

Industry leaks cited by DigiTimes suggest Apple intends to introduce OLED panels to multiple product categories, extending a display technology that is already standard on the iPhone, Apple Watch, and iPad Pro. If accurate, the shift would mark one of Apple’s most substantial display upgrades in years across its mainstream tablets and computers.

OLED displays are widely considered a major improvement over traditional LCD screens, offering deeper blacks, higher contrast ratios, better energy efficiency, and more vibrant colours. These advantages have made OLED the preferred display technology for premium smartphones and high-end tablets, and its broader adoption could significantly enhance the visual experience on Macs and iPads.

iPad mini and MacBook Pro Expected to Lead OLED Rollout

According to media reports, the iPad mini and MacBook Pro are likely to be the first remaining Apple devices to adopt OLED displays. While earlier rumours suggested a posthe sible introduction as early as 2025, more recent reports point to a 2026 launch window, with the OLED MacBook Pro potentially arriving in late 2026 or slipping into 2027.

Apple’s transition strategy appears to focus on higher-margin or compact devices first, allowing the company to scale production and manage costs before expanding OLED across more affordable and larger-screen products.

iPad Air, MacBook Air and iMac to Follow Later
Apple is expected to refresh the iPad Air later this year, but that model is widely believed to continue using an LCD display. OLED is expected to arrive in a later generation, placing the iPad Air OLED upgrade in 2027 at the earliest. The MacBook Air and iMac are also expected to transition to OLED displays toward the latter part of the rollout cycle, likely between 2027 and 2028. These devices currently rely on advanced LCD technology, and the shift to OLED would bring them closer in display quality to Apple’s Pro-branded hardware.
