Google is facing renewed leadership turbulence in India as its legal head Bijoya Roy has stepped down after just 16 months in the role, amid increasing regulatory scrutiny and legal challenges in the country.
Roy’s exit comes at a critical time for Google India, which is currently navigating multiple high-stakes issues, including antitrust investigations, AI data compliance concerns, and newly implemented content regulation rules. While Roy reportedly cited personal reasons for her resignation and is expected to pursue an entrepreneurial venture, the timing has raised questions about the company’s legal and policy stability in one of its key global markets.
Having joined Google India in November 2024 as Head of Legal, Roy brought nearly two decades of legal expertise, with prior leadership roles at major organizations such as Flipkart, Tata Housing, Asian Paints, Kodak, and Thomson Reuters. Her departure adds to a growing list of senior exits within Google’s India leadership team.
Notably, the company has also been operating without a government relations head since the resignation of Sreenivasa Reddy last year, leaving a gap in its public policy and regulatory engagement strategy. This leadership vacuum could pose challenges as Google continues to engage with Indian regulators on issues related to competition law, AI governance, data privacy, and digital content compliance.
As India remains a strategically important market for Google’s growth, the absence of key legal and policy leaders may impact its ability to effectively manage regulatory risks and maintain stakeholder alignment in an increasingly complex digital policy environment.
