The ChatGPT integration with CarPlay is rolling out globally and will be available across all user tiers, including Free, Plus, Pro, and Enterprise plans.
Apple Inc. has introduced a major upgrade to its in-car system by integrating ChatGPT into Apple CarPlay with the latest iOS 26.4 update. This marks the first large-scale rollout of an AI chatbot within Apple’s driving interface, enabling users to interact with conversational AI hands-free while on the road.
The integration is powered by support for voice-based conversational apps, allowing drivers to engage with ChatGPT directly through their car’s dashboard. Whether it’s brainstorming ideas during a commute, asking questions, or enjoying AI-generated content, the feature is designed to enhance both productivity and entertainment without distracting from driving.
To use ChatGPT on CarPlay, users must first update their iPhone to iOS 26.4 and install the latest version of the ChatGPT app. The feature is compatible only with vehicles that support Apple CarPlay. Once updated, users can connect their iPhone to their car either via USB or wirelessly, depending on the vehicle’s capabilities.
After connecting, the ChatGPT app will appear on the CarPlay home screen. Tapping the app allows users to start a new voice conversation by selecting the “New Voice Chat” option. The system transitions from “Connecting” to “Listening,” after which users can speak naturally, and ChatGPT will respond through the car’s audio system.
Users can also resume previous conversations by selecting recent chats and continuing the dialogue using voice commands. This makes it easier to maintain continuity across different sessions, even while driving.
For a more seamless experience, users can enable the Auto-Start feature within the ChatGPT app settings on their iPhone. By navigating to Voice settings and turning on “Start automatically in CarPlay,” the app will immediately begin a voice session when opened, eliminating the need for manual setup each time.
This update reflects a broader shift toward integrating AI into everyday environments, with Apple bringing conversational intelligence directly into the driving experience while maintaining a focus on hands-free interaction and user convenience. Availability in regions such as the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom is expected to follow soon.
