India’s technology sector is aligning with Narendra Modi’s recent call to promote work-from-home (WFH), virtual meetings, and reduced travel, as leading industry body Nasscom confirmed that IT firms are already enabling flexible work models to optimize energy use and operational efficiency.
Indian IT Industry Embraces Remote and Hybrid Work Models
According to Nasscom, most Indian IT and IT-enabled services (IT/ITES) companies are operating under well-established hybrid work frameworks, balancing remote work and office attendance based on business needs and client requirements. This shift aligns with broader goals of energy conservation, sustainability, and workforce flexibility, especially amid ongoing geopolitical tensions impacting global energy dynamics.
The industry body emphasized that companies are adopting prudent energy management measures, including:

The Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate (NITES) has formally urged the government to issue an advisory mandating WFH for the IT sector. In its communication to the Ministry of Labour and Employment, NITES highlighted that reducing travel and physical office operations could support energy efficiency, lower congestion, and national resource optimization.
