China Begins Trial of Humanoid Border Security Robots in $37M Deal With UBTech Robotics

China is preparing to deploy humanoid robots for border security, marking a major step in the nation’s push toward AI-driven public safety and advanced robotics integration. The initiative comes after Shenzhen-based UBTech Robotics secured a $37 million (≈₹330 crore) contract to supply next-generation humanoid robots for trial operations at a key border crossing near Vietnam.

As part of China’s expanding investment in AI, robotics, and automation, the trial aims to enhance border efficiency, improve crowd management, and strengthen surveillance capabilities. The project will rely heavily on UBTech’s flagship Walker humanoid robots, known for their autonomous navigation, advanced sensors, and self-charging technology that allows automatic battery swapping without human assistance.

The humanoid robots will begin arriving in December and will take on tasks such as guiding travellers, supporting border officers, managing queues, and assisting with logistics—testing how effectively robots can function in complex, real-world public environments.

This major deployment aligns with Beijing’s ambition to dominate the global humanoid robotics market, a key pillar of its national tech strategy. According to research firm Leaderobot, China’s humanoid robotics sector is projected to reach ¥82 billion in 2025, potentially accounting for half of worldwide market share.

The rapid growth follows major breakthroughs, including a Shanghai-built robot completing a record 100 km endurance trek, highlighting advancements in robot stability, mobility, and battery technology. Despite this progress, analysts warn of potential risks—particularly overcapacity concerns, as manufacturers scale production faster than confirmed commercial demand.

Even so, the border-security pilot marks one of the first large-scale, practical tests of humanoid robots in a government setting. If successful, China could extend robot deployment to public safety, smart cities, transportation hubs, and national security, further cementing its lead in the global robotics race.
