Garmin has rolled out Google Maps support for select smartwatch models, bringing turn-by-turn navigation directly to users’ wrists. The integration is available through the ConnectIQ Store, Garmin’s app platform, and marks a major step forward in combining navigation and fitness tracking in a single wearable experience.
With the new feature, users can set a destination on Google Maps via their Android smartphone, and their Garmin smartwatch will guide them with real-time, step-by-step directions. This feature supports activities like walking, cycling, and running, making it ideal for fitness enthusiasts and urban explorers alike.
The app is compatible with a selection of Garmin’s top smartwatch lines, including Venu, Forerunner, Vívoactive, and Fenix series. The integration allows users to keep their phones tucked away while receiving navigation prompts through vibrations and on-screen alerts.
According to Susan Lyman, Garmin’s Vice President of Consumer Sales and Marketing, “This is a game changer for users who want to stay active and hands-free. Now, they can move confidently through cities, trails, or unfamiliar routes without ever pulling out their phone.”
One standout feature is the ability to view the next three upcoming turns with a quick tap, enhancing safety and route awareness, especially in crowded or high-traffic areas.
The integration also syncs with Google’s Health Connect, allowing users to combine navigation data with their workout tracking and health insights. This holistic approach strengthens Garmin’s position in the wearables space, offering both functionality and fitness in one device.
With this update, Garmin not only enhances the user experience for outdoor navigation but also closes the gap between smartwatches and smartphones—making everyday movement smarter, safer, and more seamless.
The Google Maps app is now free to download via Garmin’s ConnectIQ store for eligible devices.
