Cybersecurity firm Kaspersky has warned users about a rise in online scams linked to the release of Avatar 3. As the film premieres across multiple countries and online searches surge, cybercriminals are taking advantage of fans eager to watch the movie online by launching fraudulent websites targeting a global audience.
Kaspersky researchers have identified several scam campaigns where fake websites claim to offer free online streaming or downloads of Avatar 3. These websites are designed to look legitimate and are published in multiple languages to attract users from different regions. However, many of these pages contain poor translations, spelling mistakes, and inconsistent content—clear warning signs of phishing and scam activity.
In most cases, when users click to watch the movie, they are shown a fake video player and asked to register to get “full” or “unlimited” access. During this process, users are prompted to share personal details such as their email address and mobile number. In later steps, scammers may also request payment information, claiming it is required to activate a free trial.
These scams pose serious risks, including identity theft, account hacking, and financial fraud, especially for users who reuse passwords across multiple platforms. Providing payment details can lead to unauthorized charges and long-term financial loss.
“Cybercriminals regularly use popular movie releases to trick users and increase the success of their scams. Users should watch movies only on official streaming platforms, be cautious of websites asking for personal or payment details, and protect all devices with trusted security software,” said Olga Altukhova, Senior Web Content Analyst, Kaspersky.
Kaspersky also stressed the importance of verifying website authenticity before entering any information. Users should carefully check website URLs, avoid unofficial streaming platforms, enable multi-factor authentication on important accounts, and monitor financial statements for suspicious activity. Using reliable cybersecurity solutions with strong phishing protection can significantly reduce the risk of falling victim to such scams.
As interest in Avatar 3 continues to grow worldwide, Kaspersky urges movie fans to stay alert and avoid offers that seem too good to be true, reminding users that legitimate movies are never released for free on unknown websites.
