India Bans Pakistan-Origin Content on OTT Platforms Amid Rising Tensions

Operation Sindoor

In light of escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (I&B) has issued a directive instructing all OTT platforms, streaming services, and digital intermediaries operating in India to immediately remove any Pakistan-origin content. This includes web series, films, songs, and podcasts, whether offered via subscription or free access.

The move comes after the deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on April 22, which claimed 26 lives. In response, India launched retaliatory strikes on May 7 under Operation Sindoor, targeting nine terrorist sites in Pakistan. The advisory, issued by Deputy Director (Digital Media) Kshitij Aggarwal, cited cross-border connections between several terrorist incidents in India and Pakistan-based actors.

The directive draws authority from Part-III of the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021. These rules require that OTT content must not threaten India’s sovereignty, security, or public order, nor should it harm the country’s relations with foreign states or incite violence.

The advisory reinforces the legal responsibility of platforms and intermediaries to prevent the dissemination of content that may compromise national security or India’s diplomatic interests. It also reminds platforms of their obligation to exercise due diligence in content moderation and highlights the need to restrict content that could threaten India’s unity and peace.

This advisory has been sent to all publishers of online curated content, relevant self-regulatory bodies, OTT associations, and digital intermediaries, urging immediate compliance. The move underscores the government’s stance on national security and reflects heightened caution in the digital media space amid geopolitical tensions.
