FedEx Founder Fred Smith Dies at 80

Global Leaders mourns as the world looses a Visionary Leader, War Hero, and Logistics Pioneer.

Frederick W. Smith, founder and executive chairman of FedEx Corp., passed away at 80 from natural causes in Memphis, Tennessee. A Marine Corps veteran and business visionary, Smith revolutionized global logistics by founding Federal Express in 1973, turning a Yale thesis into an $84 billion industry leader.

Starting with 14 aircraft and $4 million in inheritance, FedEx delivered 186 packages on its first night. Today, it moves over 17 million shipments daily across 220 countries, supports over 500,000 employees, and facilitates $2 trillion in global trade annually. Smith’s innovation in overnight delivery reshaped commerce, enabling the rise of just-in-time manufacturing and e-commerce.

A Vietnam War veteran, Smith earned the Silver Star, Bronze Star, and two Purple Hearts, and often credited the Marines for shaping his leadership. His military discipline guided FedEx through decades of growth, solidifying its air-ground network as a global standard.

In 2022, Smith stepped down as CEO after nearly five decades, one of the longest tenures among Fortune 100 leaders. He remained as executive chairman, offering strategic oversight. CEO Raj Subramaniam hailed him as a “pioneer who connected the world and shaped global commerce.”

Smith was also known for his philanthropy, championing the World War II Memorial and National Museum of the Marine Corps, and donating generously to St. Jude Children’s Hospital and Memphis charities.

Tributes poured in from tech leaders—Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella remembered his relentless innovation, while Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff called him a “brilliant giant of business.”

Smith leaves behind a legacy of service, innovation, and global impact.
