Meta’s AI System Llama Approved for Federal Use: U.S. Government Agencies to Access Advanced Artificial Intelligence Tool

Meta’s AI model Llama has officially been approved for use by U.S. government agencies, marking a significant step in the federal adoption of artificial intelligence technologies. This move aligns with the Trump administration’s broader initiative to integrate commercial AI systems into government operations.

According to senior officials, the General Services Administration (GSA) — the government’s central procurement authority — will add Meta’s Llama AI to its list of authorized AI tools for federal agencies. Josh Gruenbaum, GSA’s procurement lead, confirmed the approval ahead of the official announcement.

With this approval, federal agencies will be able to experiment with Llama, a free and open-source AI tool, under the GSA’s assurance that it complies with government security, compliance, and legal standards.

What Is Meta’s Llama AI?
Llama is a large language model (LLM) capable of processing natural language text, video, images, and audio. It belongs to the family of next-generation generative AI systems designed to accelerate digital transformation and support complex data analysis.

By deploying Llama, federal agencies can streamline critical tasks such as contract review automation, IT troubleshooting, data analysis, and workflow optimization.

Growing Government Adoption of AI Tools
In recent months, GSA has also approved competing AI solutions from industry leaders such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud AI, Anthropic, and OpenAI. These companies agreed to provide their enterprise AI services at discounted rates, while meeting strict cybersecurity and compliance requirements.

Gruenbaum clarified when asked whether companies were offering discounts to win political approval  and added, “This isn’t about currying favor. “It’s about collaboration and ensuring we all move forward together to make this country the best it can be.”

The approval of Meta’s Llama by U.S. government agencies represents a significant milestone in the adoption of generative AI in the public sector. It highlights a growing trend where federal organizations leverage AI tools to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance decision-making.

As competition heats up among big tech AI providers, Meta’s Llama joining the list of government-approved tools signals its rising credibility and influence in the artificial intelligence market.
