Meghalaya Partners with Starlink to Pilot Satellite Internet in Remote Regions

The Government of Meghalaya has signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) with Starlink to pilot satellite-based internet services in remote and hilly areas of the state, aiming to bridge long-standing connectivity gaps.

The initiative will focus on critical sectors such as education, healthcare, disaster management, and rural economic development. By leveraging Starlink’s low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite network, the project aims to deliver high-speed internet without relying on traditional infrastructure like mobile towers or fiber networks.

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma highlighted that despite significant progress in digital governance and infrastructure over the past few years, connecting remote communities remains a major challenge. He noted that the partnership represents a key step toward improving access to essential services and opportunities in underserved regions.

The deployment of satellite internet is expected to enhance telemedicine capabilities, expand digital learning access for students, and support farmers and local businesses with better connectivity. The government also aims to strengthen its broader vision of building a robust digital ecosystem and positioning Shillong as a technology hub in Northeast India.

However, the rollout of Starlink services in India is still subject to regulatory approvals. The company must secure satellite spectrum allocation, comply with national security requirements, and establish necessary ground infrastructure such as earth stations before commercial deployment can begin.

This move follows similar efforts by other states to explore satellite connectivity solutions for remote and border regions, reflecting a growing push to expand digital inclusion across India.
