AI Meets Geopolitics: Anthropic Adds National Security Veteran Richard Fontaine to Oversight Trust

AI safety company Anthropic has appointed  Richard Fontaine, CEO of the Center for a New American Security  , to its Long-Term Benefit Trust (LTBT) — an independent body guiding the company’s public benefit mission. Fontaine brings decades of national security experience, including roles in the U.S. State Department, National Security Council, and Defense Policy Board.

The LTBT plays a key role in steering Anthropic’s strategy around the safe development of advanced AI. It selects board members and advises leadership on how to maximize societal benefits and reduce risks from AI technologies. Fontaine’s addition comes at a crucial time, as powerful AI systems increasingly influence global stability, democracy, and geopolitical dynamics.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei emphasized the importance of democratic nations maintaining leadership in responsible AI development. Fontaine echoed this, stating that AI’s rapid growth has profound consequences for security, jobs, and human interaction. He expressed confidence in Anthropic’s commitment to facing these challenges seriously.

This appointment strengthens the Trust’s expertise in foreign policy and defense, underlining Anthropic’s broader mission: ensuring that transformative AI supports not just business goals, but democratic values, public safety, and global cooperation.
