Google has announced a major expansion of shopping capabilities within its Gemini AI chatbot, partnering with leading retailers such as Walmart, Shopify, Wayfair, and other major commerce platforms. The move aims to transform Gemini into a full-fledged AI-powered shopping assistant, enabling users to discover, compare, and purchase products directly within the chatbot.
Under the new feature, Gemini will support in-chat shopping and instant checkout, allowing users to complete purchases without leaving the AI interface. According to Google and Walmart, customers will be able to buy products through multiple payment providers, creating a seamless AI-driven e-commerce experience that shortens the journey from product discovery to purchase.
The announcement was made on the opening day of the National Retail Federation (NRF) Annual Convention in New York, where artificial intelligence, digital commerce, and evolving consumer behavior are key themes shaping discussions across the retail industry.
How AI Shopping Works Inside Google Gemini
Google’s new AI shopping feature allows users to ask natural-language questions and receive personalized product recommendations from participating retailers’ inventories. For example, if a user asks Gemini what equipment is needed for a winter ski trip, the chatbot will curate relevant products—such as clothing, accessories, and gear—directly from partner retailers like Walmart and Wayfair.
For Walmart customers, linking their Walmart and Gemini accounts will unlock more personalized recommendations based on purchase history and shopping preferences. Products selected through Gemini can be added directly to a user’s Walmart or Sam’s Club online shopping cart, enabling faster checkout and a unified shopping experience.
Retail Leaders on the Shift to AI-Driven Commerce
Commenting on the partnership, John Furner, Walmart’s incoming President and CEO, said the shift from traditional web or app-based shopping to agent-led AI commerce represents the next major evolution in retail. The statement was issued jointly with Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai, highlighting the growing strategic importance of AI in reshaping digital shopping experiences.
The announcement comes amid intensifying competition among Google, OpenAI, and Amazon, all of which are racing to dominate AI-powered e-commerce. The goal is to allow users to move seamlessly from browsing to buying within a single AI application, without redirecting them to external retail websites.
In October, OpenAI and Walmart unveiled a similar partnership that enables ChatGPT users to shop and use instant checkout for most items available on Walmart’s website, excluding fresh groceries. Ahead of the recent holiday shopping season, OpenAI also rolled out an in-app checkout feature that allows users to purchase products from select retailers and Etsy sellers directly within ChatGPT.
AI’s Growing Role in the Future of Retail
As AI adoption accelerates, features like conversational commerce, personalized recommendations, and instant checkout are expected to redefine online shopping. Google’s integration of retail partners into Gemini signals a broader push toward AI-first commerce, where chatbots act not just as assistants but as virtual merchants capable of influencing buying decisions and driving conversions.
