OpenAI plans to test advertising on ChatGPT’s free and Go tiers in the US, while keeping paid subscriptions ad-free to support wider access to AI tools.
OpenAI is set to begin testing advertisements on ChatGPT in the coming weeks as part of its strategy to expand global access to artificial intelligence (AI) and scale its newly launched $8 ChatGPT Go subscription. The company confirmed that ads will be shown only to logged-in adult users in the United States on its free and Go tiers, while Pro, Business, and Enterprise plans will remain completely ad-free.
The move is designed to lower barriers to entry and allow more people to use advanced AI-powered tools with fewer usage limits, without requiring a high-cost subscription. Advertising revenue will help subsidize access while supporting OpenAI’s long-term growth.
“AI is reaching a point where everyone can have a personal super-assistant that helps them learn and do almost anything,” said Fidji Simo, CEO of Applications at OpenAI, in a blog post. “Who gets access to that level of intelligence will determine whether AI expands opportunity or reinforces existing divides.”
OpenAI has been steadily working to make ChatGPT more accessible through its free tier and its lower-cost subscription offering. ChatGPT Go, first launched in 171 countries in August, is now being rolled out in the United States and all other available markets for $8 per month. The Go plan offers expanded access to messaging, image generation, file uploads, and memory features.
“Today, we’re bringing Go to the US and everywhere ChatGPT is available, giving people expanded access for $8 USD per month,” Simo said.
As part of this expansion, OpenAI will begin testing clearly labeled, non-intrusive ads to support broader availability. According to the company, ads will not influence ChatGPT’s responses and will remain separate from organic AI-generated content.
“You need to trust that ChatGPT’s answers are driven by what’s objectively useful—never by advertising,” Simo emphasized. “Your conversations and data are protected and are never sold to advertisers.”
Initially, advertisements will appear at the bottom of responses when there is a relevant sponsored product or service related to the user’s conversation. Users will be able to dismiss ads, understand why they are being shown, or disable ad personalization.
OpenAI also stated that it will not display ads to users under 18, nor will ads appear alongside sensitive or regulated topics such as health, mental health, or politics. User privacy remains a core priority, with OpenAI reiterating that chat data will not be shared with advertisers.
The company noted that its enterprise and subscription-based revenue streams remain strong, and advertising will serve as part of a diversified monetization strategy, rather than replacing paid offerings.
With the introduction of ads and the global expansion of ChatGPT Go, OpenAI aims to balance affordability, trust, and scalability, ensuring wider access to AI while maintaining transparency and user confidence.
