Google has expanded its senior AI leadership by appointing Amin Vahdat as the new Chief Technologist for AI Infrastructure, according to a Semafor report. The internal memo announcing the role highlights Google’s aggressive push to scale its AI infrastructure, cloud computing capabilities, custom chip design, and global data center network. Vahdat will report directly to Google CEO Sundar Pichai, signaling the strategic importance of this appointment as the company competes with OpenAI, Microsoft, and Amazon in the fast-growing AI race.

Amin Vahdat to Lead Google’s AI Infrastructure Roadmap
Vahdat, a veteran Google executive with over 15 years at the company, has played a key role in building Google’s AI backbone, including contributing to the development of TPU (Tensor Processing Unit) chips, next-generation data center architecture, and Google’s high-performance Jupiter networking system. His elevation underscores Google’s commitment to investing heavily in the hardware and networking layer that powers large-scale AI models, generative AI applications, and cloud-based AI services.

According to the memo, Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian emphasized the shift, stating, “This change establishes AI infrastructure as a key focus area for the company.”

Google is reportedly preparing to spend nearly $93 billion on data centers, servers, AI chips, and networking systems by the end of 2025—its largest infrastructure investment to date.

A Distinguished Career in Scalable Computing & AI Systems
Before joining Google, Amin Vahdat served as a professor at Duke University and later at the University of California, San Diego, where he also held the SAIC Chair. With over 400 published research papers, his work focuses on optimizing large-scale computing systems, distributed architectures, and efficient AI model operations—expertise that directly aligns with Google’s next era of AI expansion.

In his new role, Vahdat will oversee Google’s end-to-end AI infrastructure strategy, including:

  • Scaling computational power for generative AI
  • Advancing Google’s custom TPU architecture
  • Strengthening global cloud networking systems
  • Enhancing data center efficiency and reliability
  • Ensuring Google remains competitive in large-model training and deployment

With his deep knowledge of distributed computing and AI hardware design, Vahdat is expected to play a pivotal role in shaping Google’s technological edge as AI adoption accelerates worldwide.
